In UK offices, fixed layouts are no longer practical. Hybrid working, fluctuating occupancy and varied day-to-day use mean that space needs to adapt without constant refurbishment.
Between January and March 2025, 28% of workers in Great Britain were working on a hybrid basis, according to the Office for National Statistics. This is not a short-term shift. It has changed how office environments are planned and used.
As a result, movable walls, sliding folding partitions and other flexible partition systems are now a standard part of modern fit-outs. At Monowa, we supply, install, offer service (PPM), repairs and reactive callouts to these systems across the UK, helping clients create adaptable office spaces that work in practice with fully maintained products.
The Hybrid Office Has Changed the Fit-Out Brief
Office spaces now need to support a mix of activities within the same footprint. Focused work, meetings, video calls and collaboration all happen throughout the day.
This means layouts can no longer be based on fixed occupancy or predictable use. Instead, businesses need spaces that can be reconfigured quickly without disrupting workflow.
Movable walls, sliding folding partitions and other flexible partition systems walls for office environments allow open areas to be divided when privacy is required and reopened when collaboration is the priority. This approach supports more efficient use of available space without permanent alterations.
Why Folding Partitions and Movable walls have Become Essential
Movable walls, sliding folding partitions and other flexible partition systems allows one space to serve multiple functions. A meeting room can become a training space. An open area can be split into smaller rooms. Layouts can change throughout the day without construction work. Our systems are all supplied with full operating and maintenance manuals and client demonstrations are provided at handover or upon request. Our systems are designed for easy operation.
Instead of committing to a single layout, businesses can adapt their environment as requirements change.
This reduces the need for repeated fit-out works and provides a more efficient long-term solution. The value lies in selecting the right system for the level of acoustic performance, privacy and ease of operation required.
Our two most popular wall systems for offices
MonoWall – Movable Wall Systems
MonoWall is our high performance movable wall system.
These movable walls consist of individual panels, each independently operated, forming a secure room division when closed and stacking neatly when opened. In office settings, MonoWall is commonly used to divide boardrooms, meeting suites, conference spaces and larger open-plan areas where acoustic control and flexibility are required.
MonoWall systems are top hung, with all weight supported at the head. They require suitable structural support, typically fixed to steel beams or concrete slabs. As part of our site survey, we assess ceiling construction, structural capability and stacking arrangements to ensure safe installation and long term performance.
For higher specification projects, we have an in-house acoustician within our contracts management team to support system selection, review performance requirements and work closely with our client to ensure attention to detail on our build but also the orthogonal build up.
Pass doors can be incorporated at additional cost where required to allow access without opening the full wall.
MonoFold – Sliding Folding Partitions
MonoFold is our high performance sliding folding partition system
MonoFold systems are generally floor mounted, with the weight taken at the base. This makes them suitable where structural support at the head is limited or not available.
These hinged panels slide along a track, folding and stacking to one or both sides of the opening. MonoFold sliding folding partitions can be configured as single parting or bi parting depending on layout and available space.
In office settings, MonoFold is often used to divide meeting rooms, training areas and flexible workspace zones, allowing spaces to be opened up or separated as needed throughout the day.
Systems can be centre-pivoting, end-pivoting or part of our bespoke eccentric stacking range. A pass door is typically incorporated to allow access without operating the full partition.
MonoFold provides a practical and cost effective solution for folding office partitioning where a full operable wall system is not required.
Acoustic Performance, Privacy and Focus
In office environments, acoustic performance directly affects usability. Meeting rooms, private calls and focused work all require control over sound transfer.
Movable walls can be specified with acoustic ratings depending on the intended use. However, performance is not determined by the wall alone. Surrounding construction, ceilings, floors and interfaces all affect the result.
This is why system selection should always consider the wider environment, not just the partition itself.
Choosing the Right System
Selecting the right movable wall system requires more than comparing products and you can call our sales team on 01923 244258 for an immediate recommendation by just answering a few questions about your requirement.
Key considerations include:
- Opening width and height
- Structural support for track systems
- Required acoustic performance
- Frequency of operation
- Desired finish and appearance
Movable walls and sliding folding partitions differ in how they operate and what they require structurally. A system that works in one space may not be suitable in another.
A site survey is essential to determine the most appropriate solution based on actual conditions.
Installation, Operation and Maintenance
The value of a movable wall or sliding folding partitions system extends beyond installation. Long-term performance depends on correct operation and regular maintenance.
At Monowa, we provide PPM plans, reactive call outs, remedial works on the majority of manufacturers systems across the UK. We recommend regular maintenance, typically every 12 months depending on usage, to ensure systems continue to operate safely and efficiently.
Following any visit, we will provide full completion certification and maintenance inspection reports for your health and safety files. Our industry accreditations include, Constructionline, CHAS, Acclaim- SSIP, Safe Contractor, SMAS, CQMS, and Builders Profile.
Routine servicing helps identify wear in tracks, rollers, seals and moving parts before issues develop into more significant repairs. It also supports compliance with health and safety requirements.
Why Work With Monowa
A great partition needs great support. Monowa not only specialises in high-quality movable and sliding glass walls, but we also install, maintain, and repair them. We offer end-to-end expertise to ensure your investment operates perfectly, every time.
Our focus is on supplying systems that are suitable for the space, installed correctly and maintained to perform over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between movable walls and sliding folding partitions?
Movable walls are made up of individual panels that operate along a ceiling track system and are typically specified where higher acoustic performance is required. Sliding folding partitions use hinged panels that fold and stack together and run along a floor track and normally used where structural support is not available.
Do movable partition walls require a floor track?
MonoWall movable wall systems are top hung and operate from a ceiling track with no floor tracks, while the MonoFold requires a floor track and a top head guide channel. The appropriate option is determined during initial discussions, enquiry documentation and a survey, if required.
How much acoustic performance can movable walls achieve?
Acoustic performance varies by system, but high performance movable walls can achieve sound reduction ratings of up to around Rw59dB. The final result depends on the surrounding structure as well as the wall system itself.
How often do movable walls need servicing?
Regular maintenance is recommended, typically every 12 months depending on usage. Servicing helps maintain safe operation, protects acoustic performance and identifies potential issues before they require more extensive repairs.
Can existing and any manufacturers movable walls be repaired or maintained?
Monowa provides servicing, maintenance and repair for both new and existing systems, including those originally installed by other manufacturers, helping extend the lifespan and performance of the installation.
